Many constituents will spend some of their time on the Northern Line to either commute to work, or head into central London. However, many people will be aware that in numerous places across the line, it can be unbearably noisy. I have contacted Transport for London to ask them to act, so that journeys can be more comfortable.
TfL have assured me that reducing Tube noise is a priority for them and they are putting in place a programme of work to address and reduce excess noise where they can. TfL are currently installing new under-rail pads on the noisiest section of the Tube network which they believe will reduce in-carriage noise for passengers. Later this year, they are hoping to install these pads between Camden Town and Euston. Once the priority locations for work have been completed, they will be looking at other areas of the network, including locations along the Northern line.
Due to the complex nature of the issue of tube noise, there are many sites across the Underground network where, due to the age of the track infrastructure and current technology, it is not always possible to reduce noise levels to the standards that residents and passengers would prefer. However, they are working with industry and academia to further understand and reduce noise where possible.
If you have any specific concerns, you can log a complaint at tfl.gov.uk/contact. There is a specific category for noise and vibration with the ‘Contact Us – Tube, Rail, Overground DLR, Trams, Stations’ page. Alternatively, you can call the TfL Customer Service Centre on 0343 222 1234. This allows Transport for London to identify ‘hot-spot’ areas and specific issues so that they can prioritise work across the network.
