At DECC Questions on Thursday, Mike Freer, asked the Environment and Climate Change Secretary, Rt. Hon. Amber Rudd MP, whether the Government would continue to remain committed to renewables whilst ensuring good value for the tax payer.
Mr Freer said:
“Will my right hon. Friend confirm that the Government remain committed to renewables, while being tough on the costs of subsidy?”
The Secretary of State responded with the following:
“My hon. Friend is absolutely right. There was a focus on the levy control framework, which was particularly my approach, as soon as we came into Government. I was shocked to find the scale of the overspend and have therefore responded in order to keep consumer bills under control.”
Figures released last summer estimated that “green” energy programmes would have cost the Government as much as £9bn a year in subsidies, by 2020. Mr Freer feels this is an effective use of tax payers’ money.
