There is no doubt that new homes are needed in London. Our city is a global hub for business, culture, and enterprise, and with this status comes a growing population and greater demand for places to live.
In my constituency, I am, of course, open to housing developments which can enhance the area and be a positive contribution to our community. Indeed, in the past I have supported new build developments where they have been suitable for the locality.
Ultimately, however, I believe that each development proposed must be sensitive to the area and local interests, and must consider the impact it would have on public services.
The last time Labour had control of Barnet Council, their legacy was to allow permission for the Tally Ho tower block in North Finchley, against the wishes of local residents. Fast forward to 2024, and it is happening all over again. Across Finchley and Golders Green, there are plans on numerous sites for more tower blocks.
The people of my constituency have chosen our area to live in because they seek to lead a suburban lifestyle; one that is quieter and more peaceful than the fast pace of central London. The fact is that this isn’t possible under an oppressive skyline of high-rise tower blocks ill-fitting with the character of the area.
For this reason, I have long campaigned against overdevelopment in my constituency, and against proposals which I believe are either flawed in their current form, or simply not right for the area. Having successfully defeated plans to relocate the War Memorial and build on top of Golders Green Station, I have also been vocal in my opposition to Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan’s plan to build a 27-storey block at Finchley Central, which would create untenable congestion for those using the tube station.
I will continue to oppose overdevelopment, and will always engage with residents on plans that would have significant impacts on our local community. If there is a particular development in the constituency you have concerns about, please feel free to contact my office and I will look into the proposals.
