The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is proposing through Transport for London a major redevelopment of the Finchley Central area to build new apartments and homes. This includes on the current station car park. While new homes are much needed, development must be sensitive to the local area, and consider its surroundings and infrastructure.
The proposed development is for a total of 668 dwellings, with only a small number of residential parking spaces. The tallest part will be 27 storey’s tall which is not only out of character, but will tower over the local area.
As the consultation begins, I would encourage constituents to share their views throughout the consultation process. Details of this consultation can be found here. The detailed plans cannot yet be found online. Due to this disappointing lack of transparency, I would encourage you as residents to attend and express your views at the upcoming exhibition. The exhibition will be located on Finchley Central station car park on the below dates:
- Sunday 16th June, 2pm-6pm
- Monday 17th June, 2pm-9pm.
In my opinion this development should be rejected in its current form because:
- It is a massive over-development of the site
- It removes all commuter parking
- It provides just 11 residential parking spaces for 668 dwellings
- The tower block element will be 27 storeys tall which will dwarf the local area and not be in keeping with existing buildings (by comparison the nearby Central House is just 9 storeys tall. The Holiday Inn at Henly’s Corner is just 6 storeys and the tower block at Tally Ho Corner in North FInchley is 15 storeys)
