The Government has announced that we have now recruited over half of the promised 20,000 police officers. An extra 11,053 officers have been hired across England and Wales so far. This means that we are 55% of the way to the target set by the Government two years ago of 20,000 officers by March 2023.
Here in London, this means that the Metropolitan Police now has an extra 2,070 more police officers on our streets, helping to bring crime down and keep our neighbourhoods safe by bringing down drug gangs, reducing violent crime and tackling anti-social behaviour.
These additional officers have enabled the Met to create violence suppression units and predatory offender units to drive down all forms of violent crime, including domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.
The Metropolitan Police Service is also currently creating new town centre teams, to increase presence in busy neighbourhoods and town centres.
